Mary Schaefer, LCSW

Life can present challenges with anxiety, depression, complex decisions, parenting issues, relationship difficulties. trauma, grief, and life transitions. Through collaboration, with a strength-based perspective and focus on providing a validating and supportive setting, navigating these growth opportunities can become more manageable.

In both home based and outpatient settings, I have provided support to children, youth, families, couples and individuals of all ages using a client centered, system focus and task oriented treatment approach. My experience spans over ten years partnering with individuals of all ages experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression, anger management issues, interpersonal relationship difficulties, trauma, grief and loss, oppositional behavior and life and personal transitions. My background also includes working as a high school therapist assisting adolescents and young adults as they navigated self esteem, boundary, and relationship issues.  Crisis intervention, working with children in family transitions, adoption, senior issues and teaching social skills and emotional intelligence coaching are areas I am also experienced in addressing.

Approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution Focused Therapy, in a trauma informed focus are my specializations we will discuss in planning your services to progress toward your goals. When appropriate, varied strategies including mindfulness techniques, cognitive behavioral strategies, and coping skills will be incorporated in sessions and as home based tasks for ongoing personal growth and self –empowerment. Growth and change are possible through the therapy process by enhancing your self- awareness and personal insights, and challenging patterns that may be holding you back from your authentic self.

My philosophy is to start where a person is, engage with them by actively listening and creating a setting of trust to discuss their challenges and identified goals. The therapy process is a collaborative journey, with most optimum outcomes occurring when you are heard, validated and an active participant in all aspects of the process which will be essential in our therapeutic alliance. Coaching self –empowerment and coping skills as well as mindfulness techniques offered with a compassionate and a non- judgmental stance are foundational in my treatment focus.
